The ESOL for Health materials are designed to allow ESOL teachers, health professions and community workers to deliver health education, knowledge about the NHS and the English language needed to engage with the NHS to women with limited English or with a lack of literacy.

The ESOL for Health course comprises five modules which can be delivered individually or as a whole course.

Module 1 – ESOL for Pregnancy
Module 2 – ESOL for Birth and Child Development
Module 3 – ESOL for Healthy Lifestyle
Module 4 – ESOL for Women’s Health
Module 5 – ESOL for Carers

The modules include all the materials that a teacher needs to deliver the health topics at Pre-Entry for those who have virtually no English, Entry 1 and Entry 2.

The ESOL for Health course is aimed at ESOL students at Pre-Entry, Entry 1 and Entry 2. Higher level learners may find the vocabulary and health content useful, particularly if they are new to the UK. It could also be used with adults who have learning difficulties. All ESOL for Health materials are appropriate for Entry level Literacy learners. The ESOL for Health course also meets many of the requirements for the Every Child Matters, Protecting Vulnerable Adults and Equality and Diversity initiatives.

Each module comprises four units and each unit includes:

Video and audio – at Pre-Entry / Entry 1, supporting transcripts and tasks.
Audio – Entry 2, supporting transcripts and tasks.
Reading books, tasks and vocabulary lists for each level.
A range of Interactive activities.

Each DVD-ROM contains files for printing books and other materials in paper format, as well as video, audio, interactive activities, assessments, course evaluations, a glossary and a certificate of attendance.

The reading books are also available on the disk for use on interactive whiteboards with a special ‘page turning’ facility.

Skills focus – reading, speaking and listening plus suggestions for writing activities.

Each module has its own specific Teacher's Book which provides:

Introductions to the course and the module.
Guide to the module.
Samples of the books, tasks and vocabulary lists.
Unit by unit teacher’s notes.
Aims and learning outcomes.
ESOL and Numeracy Core Curriculum references.
An appendix with suggestions for supplementary
resources and useful websites.
